Inspiring Insights from Former Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha González

In early October 2023, this year‘s NMUN course was honored to welcome the former Spanish

Foreign Minister Arancha González at the Square at HSG for a private speaker‘s event. As one

of the guests of the "Personality in Residence" program hosted during the fall semester, she

provided compelling insights about her professional background as well as new academic

perspectives on recent matters.

Her experience and expertise were evident in her thoughtful explanations, which emphasized

the delicate balance required in international diplomacy. Further, her inputs regarding

negotiation strategies were illuminating and practical, providing the delegates with a deeper

understanding of the complexities involved in international affairs.

Ms. González Laya took pride in recounting her most significant achievements. In particular,

her role in the negotiation of the EU-UK Brexit deal stood out as a remarkable accomplishment

in her diplomatic career. Therefore, her successes served as a testament to the influential role

that diplomacy plays on the global stage, reinforcing that diplomatic efforts can yield

substantial, tangible results.

Taking these insights together, the meeting with former Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha

González Laya left a lasting impression on our NMUN delegates. Her perspective on

negotiation strategies, her notable achievements, and her guidance for women in diplomacy,

as well as her emphasis on the alignment of personal values with diplomatic responsibilities,

were educational and inspiring. In this regard, the delegates would like to thank Ms Gonzáles

Laya for this exceptional opportunity and wish her all the best for her current occupation as

dean of the Paris School of International Affairs at Sciences Po.
